What is Osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis of the spine is the erosion of cartilage in your joints. The cartilage cushions the surface of the joints and discs located in the neck and lower back. This is condition is caused by the following:

  • Damage to a joint by injury
  • Physical symptoms of osteoarthritis include instability and soreness in the arms and legs and a sore or tense neck or back. The pain goes away when lying down. Psychological symptoms include depression and helplessness.

Diagnosis

There is no specific test to diagnose osteoarthritis of the spine, however, there are some tests that can help. They are the following:

  • X-Rays
  • MRIs
  • Blood tests

A review of your medical history can help too. As a result, these exams help search for damaged bones, cartilage, and discs in an effort to rule out any other ailments.

Treatments

Treatment includes management of pain symptoms, weight loss, massage, acupuncture, applying hot or cold to sore areas( seek the doctor’s advice), nutritional supplements and non-prescription pain medication.
